I haven't blogged in a while and I was told I need to go back on blogging to talk about the life of after surgery and update.
Its almost been 11 months since I had nissen fundoplication surgery. It has changed my life so much. I had it back last April. All I remember was recovery was hard. I was in a lot of pain. Though when you hit rock bottom and medicines aren't helping your going to try the next step.
I wrote a few blogs update till 5 month post you can read.
Since the surgery I ended up getting 3 balloon esophageal surgeries. The first was in June, then need another in Sept. After Sept I was fine till Feb. I went a good 5 months perfect, no major problems. I was having pain every few months going to Er's. I was like hotel hospital you might as well make a room for me.
Sometimes even going into the er they still can't find out what is wrong. That they send you back to the Dr's that send you to the er, discharge you or keep you over night on iv's. Then bring you the wrong foods. That's besides the point. I had got real bad burning stomach pain I couldn't move a few times.
I also have dyshphiga . I still can't swallow food. They told me my esophagus is wide open now after the last balloon surgery Feb. Before it I was starting to close up again and get food stuck in my throat. Even soft food and liquids became hard to have. Worse feeling. Since the last dilation I have had so much neck pain, chest pain. No one really does much. The last esophageal balloon surgery I was admitted into the hospital for 3 days. They had to watch me.
Depending on the person everyone handles surgeries different. I still can not eat solid foods. I'm on protein shake , fluids , smoothies, soft food diet still. Good part is the weight lose. Bad part is I'm very weak. I'm getting low oxygen, low pressure, dizzy, protein , keytones, starting to malnutrition. People telling me you are really loosing to much weight. Not having enough food. Protein shakes are meal replacements. I was told they are fine to have.
Some of my Dr's tell me congrats on the weight loose you look great! Others will say see a nutritionist. Then you got the gastro if you loose 10-15 lbs more start worrying and call me. Once you hit 90-100 you will be admitted. Then you'll have bigger problems. Your really heading that way. Dropping weight to fast. That I have maintain weight now, or at least try too. That if I drop 10-15 more we are going to undo the wrap or loosen it. I said I really do not what to go through the surgery again. Since the wrap is fine. He said people that have esophageal problems even with a good wrap have to have it loosen so they can handle more food . Well since you def have dsyphiga it still might be hard. Exactly so why undo or go back in? Well he tells me next choice if it comes down to it is a feeding tube. Now I have Dr's telling me that's one thing you do not want to have done really, to get other opinions. That's if it comes to that.
Well its been a month since I almost saw the gastro Dr. good news is the weight is maintaining normal range.
I did see a nutritionist. She gave me a tons of different diets too follow. The problems is half the stuff I still can't handle or I'm allergic too. So everyone like just stick to protein drinks, but make sure to have 3 a day. Also to puree food to be soft. I can't handle yogurt, pudding either. I was told soy is thinner. It actually was better soy. So yes I heard about it from the nutritionist and friends "the magic bullet". I got one, but I mainly been make protein smoothies in it. I was also told your on a 800 calorie diet, normal is 1400-1500 a day. After surgery they have you on 800 calorie diet.
Now everyone is thinking this is horrible yes it is to go through it all. Though on a positive note the surgery really has helped me on a lot also. I'm not throwing up or having fluids come back up anymore. Though since the surgery if you over eat you will get nausea. Have to eat small meals. My chronic coughing got a little better. Every surgery has side effects. Would I recommend this surgery to someone only if it is your last choice. If you are going to end up with Barret's esophagus, you have pan or bad symptoms everyday. Do remember it might or might not help. Everything has risks, but even with risks and complications I'm still doing better then I was before it.
I am still taking prevacid. After surgery I was still on it, then went off of it, though I'm back on it.
I hope this blog helped those of you that needed info on the surgery
